What is an MOT?

Once your vehicle is around three years old, an MOT test is required every year. It ensures your car meets road safety and environmental standards, allowing drivers to stay safe and be legal to drive. If you own a vehicle, it is your job to ensure your MOT is valid. Without a valid MOT, your car insurance may become void. In the UK, it is illegal to drive your car without an MOT and insurance. You have the possibility of facing a fine of up to £1000 as well as 6/8 points on your license. This is covered under the Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

At the time of an MOT test, it is important that every car meets the required minimum legal requirements. The certified individual, carrying out the MOT, will check essential items on your car to ensure it is fully compliant. When an MOT is completed, you will receive an MOT certificate. It is important you understand what an MOT certificate means.

The certificate does not guarantee the general mechanical condition of the vehicle. The MOT certificate confirms that the vehicle meets the legal minimum environmental and road safety requirements at the time of the test without disassembly. The certificate does not replace regular maintenance. The test does not include the condition of the engine, clutch or transmission.

What does a FREE MOT history Report include?

Our comprehensive MOT history check provides everything you need to know about a vehicle's testing history

MOT Report Example
  • Check if a car has a valid MOT.
  • Keep upto date with your MOT.
  • Your MOT certificate expiry date.
  • Previous MOT history including advisories.
  • Mileage history to determine any discrepancies.
  • Failure notes. They provide a valuable insight into any car repairs carried out on a vehicle.

Remember that an MOT certificate only confirms the vehicle met the legal minimum standards at the time of the test. It doesn't guarantee the vehicle's overall mechanical condition or that it will remain roadworthy for the duration of the certificate.

Essential MOT Information

Why would a car fail its MOT?

A car may fail its MOT for many reasons. These reasons can be in the form of advisories or failures. You can see these reasons when you run a vehicle reg check using our MOT checker above.

Every MOT includes the same information which is legally required from an MOT test station. It is important to keep an eye on any advisories or failures as this can be the reason for an MOT failure.
